Scoliosis

Scoliosis Is a common condition that chiropractors see In their practice. Scoliosis occurs when the spine deviates to side to side instead of being straight. The spine normally has 3 curves that look like a C shape or a reverse C Shape.  At your neck and lower back we have a lordoric (reverse curve) and at the mid back you have a kyphotic (c shape curve).

Causes;
  • Congenital (caused by abnormalities at present at birth)
  • Idiopathic (sub-categories include infantile, juvenile, adolescent and adult)
  • Secondary (caused by deformities such as Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy or physical trauma)
Symptoms:
  • Muscular tightness and stiffness
  • Postural stiffness
  • Respiratory problems
  • Balancing issues

Treatment:
As Chiropractors, we conduct a series of orthro test to determine whether there is scoliosis or not. First test is an Adam test to see whether there is a greater “hump” on one side than the other. From the result of that we would determine if its necessary to get x rays so we can use a measuring method called Cobbs’ methods to determine the degree of spinal change.

Depending on other factors, age gender and lifestyle, the chiropractor may believe its best to refer to the local orthopaedic specialist.

Chiropractic treatment such as gentle spinal manipulation corrective exercises and soft tissue treatments has been shown to be beneficial with patients with Scoliosis.

disc bulge

A bulged disc is a common spinal injury. It can occur in your lumbar spine (lower back), thoracic spine (upper and mid back) or your cervical spine (neck).
A bulging disc can commonly be referred to as a slipped disc or a protruding disc. However, when the disc bulge is significant enough for the disc nucleus to come out of the annulus, it is known as a herniated disc.
A herniated disc can present in two ways, the nucealus can either be spill out on the side of the vertebrae (Lateral canal stenosis) or at the back of the vertebrae (central cancal stenosis). Once our chiropractors have finished their examination, they will be able to distinguish between the two.
Symptoms:
  • Low back pain
  • Referred or shooting pain down your  or arms either unilateral or bilateral.
  • Neck stiffness
  • Pain is great when bending forward or side to side.
Causes
  • Repetitive Microtrauma (overweight, poor posture etc)
  • Sudden unexpected load
  • Genetic factors
  • Type of occupation
Please note: If you have the following symptoms please contact your medical professional immediately.
  • Severe or progressive bilateral neurological deficits of the leg such as unable to strighthen  your leg or pointing your toes up or down
  • Recent onset urinary retention or urinary incontinence
  • Resent onset faecal incontinence or unable to feel your leg
  • Unexpected laxity of the anal sphincter

Treatment:

This injury is commonly seen at a chiropractic clinic.

Our Chiropractors will assess the lower back pain with a detailed history, followed up by a postural, neurological and orthopaedic testing to eliminate any neurological changes.

Our chiropractors will then discuss the reasoning behind the lower back pain, and once determined safe, our chiropractor will use a series of treatments which includes but is not limited to gentle spinal manipulations, soft tissues treatment, muscle rehab and corrective exercises.

sciatic pain

Sciatic pain is a term used for people who experience radiating pain or (shooting pain) down one or both of their legs. “Sciatica” is actually the largest nerve in your body and it is composed of two nerves which are the Tibal N and common peroneal N. both of these nerves turn can produce pain down your leg. For people who experience true sciatic nerve pain, they will understand the frustration associated with this condition, and not being able to do the things they love or would normally do.

Sciatic pain can be also missed diagnosed as what we call Piriformis syndrome. Piriformis syndrome is basically a muscle that connects from your hip to your pelvis. The sciatic nerve can either travel through the muscle or around it. If you have pelvic dysfunction or postural imbalance this can alter the muscle position which then can press on the sciatic nerve which can give you symptoms of having a sciatic condition.
Causes:
  • Spinal Arthritis
  • Spondlolthesis
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Lumbar Disc Herniation
Symptoms:
  • Burning or numbness sensation at the lower back/gluteal region
  • Lower back pain
  • Hip Pain
  • Difficulty walking

Suffering from Vertigo symptoms can be a debilitating condition for anyone at any age. It can affect your ability with normal everyday living and can be a nuisance to manage. It is important to understand that vertigo and dizziness are two difference conditions. Vertigo is defined as the person itself is moving around while its external environment is still. Dizziness is defined as the person is still and the external environment is moving around.
The most common types of Vertigo are:
  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Vestibular Neuronitis
  • Meniere’s Disease.
Symptoms:
  • Ringing in ear (Tinnitus)
  • Nausa/Vomiting
  • Nystagmus
  • Headache
  • Sweating
  • Ear pain

Chiropractic Treatment
BPPV treatment – Epley’s man as shown in the research below – is the best!
Depending on the causation of your vertigo and dizziness, it may be from a musculoskeletal origin, and this is where chiropractic care can help in reducing your symptoms.
With a series of spinal adjustments at the cervical (neck) and upper thoracic region (upper back), the aim is to provide and encourage more movement within those regions, and thus placing less pressure on the nerves that affect your ear and balance and may assist in the reduction of your symptoms. In, addition, soft tissue techniques with corrective exercises may also assist.
